- What is it?
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is made from a small sample of your own blood and injected into thinning areas of the scalp to support the hair roots.
- How many sessions?
- Usually 3 to 6, about a month apart, then a maintenance session every 4 to 6 months if the doctor advises it.
- How long does it last?
- PRP supports the roots for a while but does not stop the underlying cause. Maintenance sessions and prescribed treatment are usually needed to keep the benefit.
- Is it safe?
- Because the plasma is your own, allergic reactions are rare. The doctor checks your health and medicines first, and it is not suitable for everyone.
What is PRP Hair Treatment?
Platelets are small blood cells that carry growth factors, natural signals that help tissue repair. PRP is plasma with a higher concentration of platelets than normal blood. It is made by drawing a small amount of your blood and spinning it in a centrifuge.
The plasma is then injected into the scalp where hair is thinning. It is used mainly for male and female pattern hair loss and for early thinning at the crown or parting.
At Chamak Clinic the doctor looks for the cause of your hair fall first, with a scalp examination and blood tests for iron and ferritin, thyroid, vitamin D and hormones where relevant. PRP works alongside prescribed treatment, not instead of it.
Used for
What it can help with
- Your own plasma
No foreign ingredient is injected.
- Supports thinning hair
Aimed at hair roots that are still alive.
- Short sessions
About an hour, with no time off work for most people.
- Works with medicines
Added to prescribed treatment, not a replacement for it.
- Cause found first
Blood tests and a scalp check come before any procedure.
How does it work?
- Blood draw
A small sample of blood is taken from your arm, like a routine test.
- Spinning
The sample is spun in a centrifuge, which separates the platelet-rich plasma from the other blood cells.
- Injection
The plasma is injected in small amounts across the thinning areas of the scalp, after numbing.
- Signals
The growth factors in the plasma are thought to support the hair roots and the blood supply around them.
- Course
Several sessions are spaced a month apart, because hair grows slowly and the effect builds over months.
What happens during a session?
- Assessment
The doctor examines the scalp, reviews your blood test results and medicines, and confirms PRP is suitable.
- Blood draw
A small blood sample is taken and spun in a centrifuge.
- Numbing
The scalp is cleaned and a numbing cream or small local injections are used.
- Injections
The plasma is injected across the thinning areas in small amounts. This takes around 15 to 30 minutes.
- Finishing
You can go back to your day. The doctor tells you when to wash your hair and what to continue at home.
Who is a good candidate?
- Male or female pattern hair loss in the early or middle stages
- Thinning at the crown, temples or parting where hair roots are still alive
- People already using prescribed treatment who want to add to it
- Hair fall that has been investigated and the cause treated or ruled out
- Thinning after illness or delivery that has not settled once the cause is corrected
Is PRP for hair safe for Indian skin?
PRP is made from your own blood and injected into the scalp, so skin colour does not limit it and there is no light or heat on the skin. Indian scalps often have oily skin, dandruff or inflammation at the same time, so the doctor checks for these first and treats them, because they can also add to hair fall. Mild bruising or redness settles on its own.
Who should delay or avoid it?
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Blood or platelet disorders, or low haemoglobin
- Blood thinners or a bleeding disorder (tell the doctor)
- An active infection, cold sore or open wound on the area
- Cancer under treatment, or a serious ongoing illness (ask your doctor first)
- Smooth, shiny bald areas where hair roots have been lost for many years
The doctor checks your medicines and health before any procedure and may advise waiting or a different treatment.

Results: what to expect
Hair grows slowly, so changes are judged over months, not weeks. Some people notice less shedding after two or three sessions and gradually thicker-looking hair in the following months. Others notice little. How much it helps depends on the cause of the hair loss, how early it is treated and whether you also use the treatment the doctor prescribes. The doctor reviews your progress at each visit and does not continue a course that is not helping.
Does it hurt?
A numbing cream or small local injections make it comfortable for most people. You feel pinpricks and pressure, and the forehead and temples are more sensitive than the crown. The scalp can feel tender or tight for a day.
PRP Hair Treatment cost in Chennai
The cost depends on your skin and your plan. What decides it:
- The area treated: a parting costs less than the whole scalp.
- The number of sessions in your plan.
- Whether PRP is combined with GFC, mesotherapy or other treatment.
- Blood tests and maintenance sessions later.

PRP Hair Treatment: questions
Does PRP work for everyone?
No. It helps some people with pattern hair loss and does little for hair fall caused by thyroid trouble, low iron or stress. That is why the cause is looked for first.
Will I still need medicines?
Usually yes. PRP is added to prescribed treatment, such as minoxidil or finasteride where the doctor advises them, not used instead of it. Stopping the medicines can let the hair loss continue.
Why are blood tests done first?
Low iron or ferritin, thyroid problems, low vitamin D and hormone changes can all cause hair fall. Treating them is the first step, and PRP will not fix them.
Is PRP suitable for women?
Yes. Women with thinning at the parting or diffuse thinning can have it, once causes such as iron, thyroid, PCOS or a recent delivery are checked.
Can it be done on a bald patch?
If the scalp is smooth and shiny, the hair roots may be gone and PRP is unlikely to help. The doctor can tell you honestly after examining the scalp.
Can I have PRP while pregnant or breastfeeding?
It is usually advised to wait. Many hair changes after delivery settle by themselves, and the doctor can advise on safe options.
Can I colour my hair after PRP?
Wait at least a day, or longer if the scalp is tender. Ask the doctor for your own case.
Is a hair transplant better than PRP?
They do different things. PRP supports hair that is still there. A transplant moves hair to bald areas and is discussed when roots are lost. The doctor can advise which fits your stage.
Does it hurt more than a normal injection?
There are many small injections, so it feels more than one. Numbing makes it tolerable for most people.
Do I need a consultation before a treatment?
Yes. Every treatment starts with a consultation. The doctor examines you and advises a procedure only if it suits you; many can be done the same day.
