Acne and pimples
Acne and pimple treatment at Chamak Clinic, Chennai
A plan matched to your type of acne, from a skin doctor.
Acne starts in the pores: oil, dead skin and bacteria block a pore, and the blocked pore becomes a blackhead, a whitehead, a red pimple or, deeper down, a painful cyst. Most people have a mix.
What causes acne and pimples?
- Excess oil from hormones, especially in the teens and around periods
- Pores blocked by dead skin and heavy creams or make-up
- Acne bacteria multiplying inside a blocked pore
- Hormonal conditions such as PCOS
- Some medicines, including steroids
- Stress, poor sleep and, for some people, a high-sugar diet
Signs to look for
- Blackheads and whiteheads
- Red, tender pimples
- Deep, painful cysts
- Breakouts along the jaw before periods
- Dark marks or pits left behind
Acne responds when the treatment matches its type and grade. The doctor grades your acne, looks for triggers such as hormones, medicines or skincare, and builds a plan of prescription care with in-clinic procedures where they help.
Treating acne early is also the surest way to prevent scars and dark marks.
Types of acne and pimples
- Comedonal acneBlackheads and whiteheads, mainly on the nose, forehead and chin.
- Inflammatory acneRed, tender pimples and pus spots.
- Nodular or cystic acneDeep, painful lumps that last weeks and are the most likely to scar.
- Hormonal acneBreakouts along the jaw and chin, often before periods, sometimes with irregular cycles.
- Body acnePimples on the back, chest and shoulders, often worse with sweat and tight clothes.
How the doctor treats it
- Prescription creams and, where needed, tablets: the base of every plan.
- Comedone extraction and salicylic or mandelic peels to clear pores.
- An injection into a painful cyst to settle it quickly.
- Carbon laser peel for oily, congested skin.
- Hormone tests for acne with irregular periods or excess facial hair.
The doctor decides what is right for you after examining you. A prescription is written only when one is appropriate.
Your treatment journey
- Consultation
The doctor examines your skin or scalp, asks about your history and medicines, and orders tests only if they are needed.
- Preparation
Prescribed creams, sun care or a test spot first, so the skin is ready and the risk of irritation stays low.
- Treatment
In-clinic sessions, spaced over weeks, alongside a home routine that does most of the daily work.
- Aftercare
Review visits, home care and a maintenance plan, so the improvement lasts.

Acne Treatment: questions
Will a peel alone clear my acne?
Rarely. Peels speed things up; the medicines do most of the work. The doctor plans both together.
How long does acne treatment take?
Most people see a change in six to eight weeks, and a course usually runs three to six months, followed by a lighter routine to keep it away.
Does diet cause acne?
Diet is a trigger for some people, mainly high-sugar foods and, in some, milk. It is rarely the only cause, so treatment still matters.
Will acne tablets harm me?
Prescribed tablets are chosen and monitored by the doctor. Some, such as isotretinoin, need blood tests and are never taken in pregnancy.
Can I wear make-up with acne?
Yes, if it is labelled non-comedogenic and removed fully at night.
Do I need a consultation before a treatment?
Yes. Every treatment starts with a consultation. The doctor examines you and advises a procedure only if it suits you; many can be done the same day.
How much does a treatment cost?
The consultation is ₹500. Treatment prices depend on the area, what is used and the number of sessions, so the doctor gives you the exact price after examining your skin — before anything is done.
Not sure where to start with acne and pimples?
A consultation comes first: Dr Rohini K examines you, explains the options that suit you, and tells you the plan and the price before anything is done.
