What is Body Contouring?

Body contouring with radiofrequency uses a handpiece that sends radio waves into the skin and the fat under it. The energy warms the tissue to a controlled temperature, which tightens collagen fibres and helps the skin make new collagen.

Some devices add pulsed magnetic fields, which are used to stimulate muscle and improve the effect on firmness. Others combine suction or massage to help smooth cellulite.

It is designed for loose or crepey skin, mild sagging and cellulite, and for improving the outline of the body. It does not remove large amounts of fat or loose, hanging skin, which need surgery.

What it can help with

  • No downtime

Back to your day straight after a session.

  • Firmer skin

Helps skin feel tighter and look smoother over the course.

  • Cellulite

May soften the look of dimpling.

  • Comfortable

Warmth, not pain, in most people.

  • Pairs well

Works alongside fat freezing and muscle toning.

Areas we treat

  • TummyFor mild looseness after pregnancy or weight change.
  • ThighsFor cellulite and loose skin; inner thighs respond more slowly.
  • Buttocks and hipsFor cellulite and a smoother outline.
  • Upper armsFor soft, loose skin; a modest effect.
  • KneesFor crepey skin above the knees.
  • Face and neckA different, lower-power handpiece is used; see skin tightening.

How does it work?

  1. Energy

The handpiece sends radiofrequency waves into the skin and fat layer.

  2. Heat

The tissue warms to a controlled temperature, while the skin surface is monitored and kept comfortable.

  3. Collagen

The heat tightens existing collagen and encourages the skin to make more over the weeks that follow.

  4. Circulation

Warmth and massage improve blood flow and fluid movement, which may help the look of cellulite.

  5. Firming

The skin gradually looks firmer and smoother across the course.

What happens during a session?

  1. Assessment

The doctor checks your skin, history and goals, and takes measurements and photographs.

  2. Preparation

The area is cleaned and a gel is applied. Jewellery and metal are removed.

  3. Treatment

The handpiece moves slowly over the area. You feel warmth like a hot-stone massage.

  4. Finishing

The skin is cleaned and moisturised. There is no recovery time.

  5. Review

Measurements and photographs are repeated partway through and at the end of the course.

Who is a good candidate?

  • Mild to moderate looseness of the tummy skin, including after pregnancy
  • Cellulite on the thighs, buttocks or hips
  • Soft, crepey skin on the upper arms or inner thighs
  • Wanting a firmer outline without surgery or downtime
  • People near a healthy weight and with stable weight

Is body contouring and skin tightening safe for Indian skin?

Radiofrequency heats the deeper tissue and does not rely on pigment, so it is generally suitable for Indian skin and can be used on darker tones. The key is correct temperature control to avoid burns and dark marks. The doctor starts with moderate settings, uses a gel and checks the skin throughout. Stretch marks and cellulite are common after pregnancy and weight change, and the doctor will explain what can and cannot improve.

Who should delay or avoid it?

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • A pacemaker or metal implants in the area
  • A pacemaker, defibrillator or other electronic implant
  • Metal implants, coils or plates in the area
  • An active infection, cold sore or open wound on the area
  • Large amounts of hanging skin (surgery suits better)
  • Blood thinners or a bleeding disorder (tell the doctor)
  • Poor sensation in the area, for example from diabetes (discuss with the doctor)

The doctor checks your medicines and health before any procedure and may advise waiting or a different treatment.

Results: what to expect

Skin may feel warmer and look slightly firmer right after a session, but the real change builds over the course and for a few months afterwards as collagen forms. Expect a gradual improvement in firmness and a smoother look to cellulite, not removal of fat or a surgical result. The doctor reviews progress and tells you honestly what to expect. Results depend on your starting skin, age and weight.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel a deep, comforting warmth. It should never burn. Tell the doctor at once if it feels too hot, because the setting can be changed straight away.

Body Contouring: questions

Does it remove fat?

Not in a meaningful way. Radiofrequency firms skin and smooths cellulite. For a pocket of fat, fat freezing is the usual option.

Can it remove stretch marks?

It does not remove them. It may improve the texture of the surrounding skin slightly. Other treatments, such as microneedling or fractional laser, are used for stretch marks.

How is it different from HIFU?

HIFU focuses ultrasound at a specific depth and is mostly used on the face and neck. Radiofrequency heats a broader area and suits the body.

Is it safe after pregnancy?

Yes, once you have finished breastfeeding and your weight is stable. It can help loose tummy skin, but not diastasis (separated muscles), which needs a doctor's check.

Does cellulite go away completely?

Cellulite is a normal feature of the skin and fat. Treatment can soften its look, but it may come back over time without upkeep.

How soon will I see a difference?

Many people see a change in skin feel and tone after a few sessions, and the full effect builds over weeks.

Can I combine it with other treatments?

Yes. Fat freezing reduces a bulge and radiofrequency tightens the skin; EMS tones muscle. The doctor sequences them.

Is the magnetic part safe?

Pulsed magnetic fields are used in many devices. They must not be used with a pacemaker, other electronic implants or some metal implants, so tell the doctor before you start.

Can I have it if I am diabetic?

Often yes if well controlled, but sensation can be reduced, so the doctor takes extra care. Tell the doctor first.

Do I need maintenance?

Collagen changes with age, so many people have a top-up every few months. The doctor will advise.

Do I need a consultation before a treatment?

Yes. Every treatment starts with a consultation. The doctor examines you and advises a procedure only if it suits you; many can be done the same day.
