What is it?
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) sends energy to set depths under the skin, warming small points to tighten the skin over the following months.
How many sessions?
Usually one session, which may be repeated after 9 to 12 months.
How long does it last?
The effect builds over 2 to 3 months and is not permanent. It lasts about a year, but ageing continues, so many people repeat it.
Is it safe for Indian skin?
Generally yes. HIFU passes under the skin surface and does not seek out pigment, so it carries a low risk of colour change.

What is HIFU Treatment?

HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. A handpiece directs ultrasound waves to specific depths below the skin surface, the same layer that surgeons tighten in a facelift, without cutting the skin.

At each focus point the tissue warms to a temperature that triggers a repair response. Over the following weeks to months the skin makes new collagen and the existing fibres tighten, giving a modest lift.

It suits mild to moderate looseness. It is not a replacement for a facelift, and the doctor tells you honestly if surgery or another treatment would suit you better.

Used for

What it can help with

  • Non-surgical

    No cuts, stitches or anaesthesia.

  • No downtime

Most people go back to work the same day.

  • One session

A single visit, rather than a long course.

  • Deep support layer

Works on the layer that supports the skin.

  • Natural change

The lift builds slowly, so the face still looks like you.

Areas we treat

  • JawlineAims to define the lower face; commonly treated.
  • CheeksFor mild sagging; the doctor avoids over-tightening.
  • Double chin (under the chin)Works on skin looseness; large fat pads may need another approach.
  • NeckFor crepey, loose skin; results are modest.
  • Brows and foreheadA small lift of the brow; not for heavy lids.
  • Lower face and jowlsOften combined with the jawline for balance.

How does it work?

  1. Mapping

The doctor marks the areas and chooses the depths for your skin and bone structure.

  2. Ultrasound

The handpiece sends focused ultrasound to depths below the surface, leaving the skin surface untouched.

  3. Heat points

Each focus point warms a tiny volume of tissue, which prompts repair.

  4. Collagen

Over the next two to three months the skin tightens and new collagen forms.

  5. Maintenance

As collagen slowly declines with age, a repeat session is often considered after 9 to 12 months.

What happens during a session?

  1. Assessment

The doctor examines your skin and facial structure, asks about fillers, threads and medicines, and tells you what is realistic.

  2. Marking

The areas are marked and the face is cleaned. A gel is applied.

  3. Treatment

The handpiece delivers lines of energy at two or three depths. You feel bursts of heat or a deep ache for a moment.

  4. Finishing

The gel is wiped off and a soothing cream and sunscreen are applied. A full-face session takes 45 to 90 minutes.

Who is a good candidate?

  • Mild to moderate looseness along the jawline
  • A double chin made of skin and a little fat
  • Mild sagging of the cheeks, neck or brows
  • Crepey skin on the neck
  • People who want a non-surgical option with no downtime
  • A first step in the early signs of ageing, before surgery is needed

Is HIFU skin tightening safe for Indian skin?

HIFU works below the surface and does not rely on pigment, so it is generally a good option for Indian skin, with a low chance of darkening or lighter patches. The doctor still adjusts the depth and energy for your skin thickness and face shape. Thin skin and bony areas need more care, and a pre-treatment check on fillers or threads in the area is needed.

Who should delay or avoid it?

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • A pacemaker or metal implants in the area
  • An active infection, cold sore or open wound on the area
  • Active cystic acne on the area
  • Very heavy sagging, where surgery may suit better
  • Recent fillers, threads or procedures in the area (the doctor decides the gap)

The doctor checks your medicines and health before any procedure and may advise waiting or a different treatment.

Results: what to expect

The change is gradual. Some tightness may be felt in the first days, and the lift builds over two to three months as collagen forms. The effect is a modest firming and lift of the jawline, neck or brow, not the result of a facelift. Results depend on your age, skin thickness, how loose the skin is and your collagen. The doctor reviews at around three months and tells you whether a repeat is worthwhile.

Does it hurt?

Many people find HIFU the most uncomfortable of the tightening treatments. You feel bursts of deep heat or a sharp ache, especially over bony areas such as the jawline and cheekbones. The doctor can lower the energy, and a painkiller before the session can help if advised.

HIFU Treatment cost in Chennai

The cost depends on your skin and your plan. What decides it:

  • The areas treated: lower face and jawline, full face, neck or brow.
  • The size of the area and the number of lines of energy needed.
  • Whether a repeat session is planned.
  • Whether HIFU is combined with other treatments.

HIFU Treatment: questions

Is HIFU a facelift?

No. It gives a modest lift and tightening for mild to moderate looseness. The doctor tells you honestly if your skin would be better served by something else.

When will I see the result?

A little firmness may show in the first weeks. The lift builds over two to three months as new collagen forms.

Is there any downtime?

No. You can go back to work the same day, though the area may feel tender for a few days and slightly swollen.

Can I have HIFU if I have fillers?

It depends on where the fillers are and when they were done. The doctor may wait a few weeks or change the depth and area. Tell the doctor about all fillers and threads.

Is it suitable at my age?

It is most useful for mild to moderate looseness, often from the 30s or 40s onwards. For very loose skin, surgery or a combination may suit better.

Can it melt a double chin?

It can tighten loose skin under the chin and may reduce a small amount of fat. A large fat pad usually needs a different treatment, and the doctor tells you which.

How is it different from fat freezing?

HIFU tightens skin and tissue support. Fat freezing reduces a pocket of fat. The doctor may suggest one or both for different concerns.

Is it safe to repeat?

Yes, usually after 9 to 12 months. Repeating too soon does not help and raises the risk of side effects.

Can men have HIFU?

Yes. It is used for jawline definition, loose neck skin and brow position. The doctor adjusts the settings for thicker skin.

Will I see a difference if I lose weight after?

Weight change alters the face, and a large loss can leave extra skin. It is better to reach a steady weight before treatment.

Do I need a consultation before a treatment?

Yes. Every treatment starts with a consultation. The doctor examines you and advises a procedure only if it suits you; many can be done the same day.
