Microneedling at a glance
- Sessions
- Usually 3 to 6, four to six weeks apart
- Session time
- About 1 hour including numbing
- Downtime
- Redness for 1 to 3 days; mild dryness for a few more
- Results last
- Gradual improvement that builds up; occasional top-ups
- Starting price
- From ₹3,000
- What is it?
- A pen of fine sterile needles makes tiny channels in the skin, prompting the skin to repair itself and make new collagen.
- How many sessions?
- Usually 3 to 6, four to six weeks apart, depending on the scars and skin.
- How long does it last?
- Improvements built from new collagen can last for a long time, but skin keeps ageing, so occasional top-ups may be advised.
- Is it safe for Indian skin?
- Yes. It does not use heat, so the risk of pigmentation is lower than with many lasers, provided the skin is prepared and sun care is followed.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a pen-like device with very fine sterile needles that move up and down. They make thousands of tiny controlled channels in the skin. The skin treats these as small injuries and repairs them, producing new collagen and elastin.
The doctor sets the needle depth for the area and the problem. Shallow depths are used for texture and pores; deeper settings are used for acne scars. Plasma prepared from your own blood (PRP) can be applied during the session, and some people have it for faster healing and a better skin response.
Used for
What it can help with
- Scar and texture improvement
Helps boxcar and rolling acne scars over a course.
- Smaller-looking pores
Improves texture and the look of open pores.
- No heat
A good option for skin that reacts to laser.
- Short downtime
Most people return to normal activity in a few days.
- Can be combined
Works with PRP, peels or subcision in the same plan.
Areas we treat
- FaceThe most common area; depth is lower on thin skin near the eyes.
- CheeksThe usual area for acne scars; deeper settings may be used.
- Forehead and templesShallow depth because the bone is close to the skin.
- NeckSkin is thinner; the doctor uses a gentler setting.
- Abdomen and thighsUsed for some stretch marks, over several sessions.
How does it work?
- Channels
Fine needles make microscopic channels in the skin at a depth set for your concern.
- Repair
The skin sees the channels as minor injury and starts its healing response.
- Collagen
Over the following weeks the skin makes new collagen and elastin, which firms and smooths the area.
- Absorption
Serums or PRP applied during the session reach the skin more easily through the channels.
- Course
A series of sessions builds the effect, with healing time between them.
What happens during a session?
- Assessment
The doctor examines your scars and skin, checks your medicines and plans the depth.
- Numbing
A numbing cream is applied for 30 to 45 minutes. The skin is then cleaned.
- PRP (if planned)
A small blood sample is taken and spun to separate the plasma.
- Needling
The pen is passed over the area in even strokes at the depth set for your scars.
- Soothing
A calming serum, or PRP, is applied, then sunscreen. Mild redness is expected.
Who is a good candidate?
- Acne scars, particularly boxcar and rolling scars
- Open pores and uneven texture
- Fine lines and early skin laxity
- Some stretch marks
- Dull skin with early signs of ageing
- Skin that needs a non-heat alternative to a laser
Is microneedling safe for Indian skin?
Microneedling does not use heat or light, so it is a common choice for darker skin that is prone to pigmentation after laser. The risk of dark marks is lower but not zero: inflamed or sun-exposed skin can still darken. The doctor prepares the skin, avoids active breakouts, sets a suitable depth and insists on sun protection afterwards.
Who should delay or avoid it?
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Isotretinoin (acne tablets) in the last six months
- Active acne breakouts or inflamed pimples on the area
- A tendency to form keloids or thick scars
- An active infection, cold sore or open wound on the area
- Blood thinners or a bleeding disorder (tell the doctor)
- Skin cancer or a suspicious lesion in the area
The doctor checks your medicines and health before any procedure and may advise waiting or a different treatment.

Results: what to expect
Skin is red like mild sunburn for a day or two, and most people notice a healthy glow once this settles. Texture, pores and shallow scars improve gradually over the course, as new collagen forms over weeks to months. Deep scars improve less and may need subcision or another treatment as well. The doctor reviews photographs at each visit to track progress.
Does it hurt?
With numbing cream, most people feel pressure and a light scratching. Bony areas such as the forehead and jawline feel sharper. The numbing wears off within an hour or so after the session.
Microneedling cost in Chennai
The cost depends on your skin and your plan. What decides it:
- The area treated and the depth required.
- Whether PRP is added (it needs a blood draw and preparation kit).
- The number of sessions in your plan.
- Whether other treatments such as subcision are combined.

Microneedling: questions
Is microneedling the same as dermapen or dermaroller?
They use the same idea. A pen with automated needles gives more even depth and less skin drag than a hand roller, which is why clinics prefer it.
Can microneedling remove acne scars?
It improves many acne scars, mainly boxcar and rolling types. Ice-pick scars and very deep scars need other procedures. The comparison under subcision explains which scar suits which treatment.
Is PRP necessary?
No. The doctor may suggest PRP for scars or ageing skin, but microneedling works on its own for texture and pores.
Is it safe with active acne?
Not on inflamed acne, because needling can spread bacteria and worsen breakouts. The doctor treats the acne first.
Can I have it for stretch marks?
It can improve the texture and colour of some stretch marks, particularly newer ones. Older white marks improve less.
How soon can I wear make-up?
After 24 hours, using mineral make-up and clean brushes. Some people prefer to wait two days.
Will I look bad for an event?
Redness usually settles in 1 to 3 days. Book at least a week before an event to be safe.
Can I have it during pregnancy?
It is usually postponed until after pregnancy and breastfeeding, and PRP is not used then.
How is it different from a laser?
Microneedling uses needles, not light or heat. It works on collagen from below the surface and is gentler on pigment-prone skin, but it often needs more sessions for deep scars.
Can men have microneedling?
Yes. It is used for acne scars and texture in men. Bearded areas are done with care to avoid ingrown hairs.
Do I need a consultation before a treatment?
Yes. Every treatment starts with a consultation. The doctor examines you and advises a procedure only if it suits you; many can be done the same day.
