What is it?
A laser that sends very short pulses of light into the skin to break up excess pigment, which the body then clears away over the following weeks.
How many sessions?
Usually 6 to 10, two to four weeks apart. Spot treatment of a few freckles may need fewer.
How long does it last?
Cleared pigment does not return by itself, but new pigment can form with sun, heat and hormones. Sunscreen and maintenance sessions help keep the tone even.
Is it safe for Indian skin?
Yes, when the laser is used at low settings by a doctor who knows darker skin. Aggressive settings can darken the skin, so the doctor starts gently.

What is Q-Switch Laser Treatment?

A Q-switched laser stores energy and releases it in extremely short bursts, billionths of a second long. The pulse is absorbed by pigment such as melanin and shatters it into tiny particles without heating the surrounding skin for long.

Your body's own cleaning cells carry those particles away over the next few weeks. Used at low energy over the whole face, the treatment is called laser toning. Used at higher energy on a single spot, it treats freckles, sun spots and other well-defined marks.

It is the same family of laser that is used to fade tattoos, which is why the doctor chooses the settings very carefully for pigment in the skin.

Used for

What it can help with

  • Targets pigment

Aims at excess pigment while leaving the surrounding skin in place.

  • No real downtime

Most people return to work the same day.

  • Short sessions

A full-face session is usually about half an hour.

  • Works with other care

Fits alongside prescription creams and peels in one plan.

  • Tone and texture

Low-energy toning can also leave skin feeling smoother and less oily.

Areas we treat

  • Full face (toning)Low settings over the whole face; the commonest use.
  • Cheeks and foreheadCommon sites of melasma and sun spots; treated with care.
  • Single spotsFreckles and sun spots can be treated individually at higher energy.
  • Neck and handsTan and age spots; skin here is thinner and heals slower.
  • Underarms and elbowsDarkening can be treated, but friction and shaving habits matter.

How does it work?

  1. Pulse

The laser delivers an ultra-short pulse of light of a wavelength that pigment absorbs.

  2. Break-up

The pigment particles shatter into fragments much smaller than before.

  3. Clearing

The body removes the fragments over two to four weeks, so patches look less dark.

  4. Gentle stimulation

At low settings the pulses also calm oil glands and refresh the skin surface a little.

  5. Repeat

Pigment sits at different depths, so a course of sessions is needed to work through it layer by layer.

What happens during a session?

  1. Assessment

The doctor looks at the type of pigmentation, your skin tone, medicines and past treatments, and decides if the laser suits you.

  2. Preparation

Your face is cleaned and make-up and cream removed. You and the team wear protective eyewear.

  3. Test spot

Where advised, a small patch is treated first and checked before the full area.

  4. Laser

The handpiece is passed evenly over the face or aimed at the spots. A full-face session takes 20 to 30 minutes.

  5. Soothing

A cooling gel and sunscreen are applied and you go back to your day.

Who is a good candidate?

  • Tan and uneven skin tone on the face, neck or arms
  • Freckles and sun spots
  • Dark marks left behind after acne
  • Some types of melasma, alongside prescription creams and sun protection
  • Birthmarks and patches of pigment that a doctor has confirmed are suitable
  • Dull, tired-looking skin where toning is wanted along with a pigment plan

Is Q-switch laser for pigmentation safe for Indian skin?

Darker skin has more melanin, so the laser can also act on normal pigment and leave the skin darker or patchy if the energy is too high. The doctor uses the wavelength that suits Indian skin, low and even energy for toning, and a test spot where advised. Melasma in particular is sensitive to heat, so the doctor decides whether the laser suits your type of melasma and keeps your prescription creams going alongside it.

Who should delay or avoid it?

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Isotretinoin (acne tablets) in the last six months
  • A fresh tan or sunburn on the area
  • An active infection, cold sore or open wound on the area
  • Photosensitising medicines or a history of light-triggered rashes (tell the doctor)
  • A mole or dark mark that has changed, bleeds or looks unusual (it must be examined first)

The doctor checks your medicines and health before any procedure and may advise waiting or a different treatment.

Results: what to expect

Skin often looks a little brighter and more even after a few sessions, and spots and freckles start to fade as the pigment clears. Deeper patches and melasma respond more slowly and may need several months. Results vary with the type of pigment, how deep it sits, your sun exposure and your hormones. The doctor reviews progress at each visit and changes the plan if the skin is not responding.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel light snapping or tingling, often compared with a rubber band flicked against the skin. Toning settings are usually comfortable and need no numbing. Spot treatment at higher energy stings more for a moment, and the doctor can use numbing cream or cooling if needed.

  • Whether you need full-face toning or spot treatment.
  • The size of the area and how many spots are treated.
  • The type of pigmentation and the number of sessions in your plan.

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning for 2 weeks before.
  • Stop waxing, threading, peels and strong creams such as retinoids on the face as the doctor advises.
  • Come with a clean face, without make-up or creams.
  • Bring the list of creams and medicines you use, including any pigment creams.
  • Tell the doctor if you have ever had cold sores on the face.

Aftercare

Q-Switch Laser Treatment: questions

Is Q-switch laser the same as laser toning?

Laser toning is one way of using a Q-switched laser: low energy, passed evenly over the face. Spot treatment uses the same laser at a higher energy on a particular mark.

Does it work for melasma?

It can help some people, but melasma is sensitive to heat and can return or worsen if the laser is too strong. The doctor decides if it suits your type, and uses it alongside creams and sunscreen, never on its own.

Will the pigmentation come back?

Melasma and sun-related pigment can return with sun, heat and hormones. Daily sunscreen, the prescribed creams and occasional maintenance sessions keep the tone even.

Can I have it during pregnancy?

No. Pigment changes in pregnancy often settle on their own after delivery, so treatment is usually postponed. The doctor can advise on safe care in the meantime.

How soon will I see results?

Spots and freckles may start to fade within a couple of weeks. Overall tone usually improves gradually over several sessions.

Will my skin flake or peel?

Full-face toning usually causes no peeling. Spots treated at higher energy may darken slightly and flake off in a few days.

Can I wear make-up after the session?

Mineral make-up and sunscreen are fine the same day. Wait until any redness settles for heavier make-up.

Is it the same laser as for tattoos?

It is the same family of laser. For tattoos it is used at higher energy to break up ink; for skin pigment the doctor uses lower settings chosen for your skin.

Can I combine it with a peel or facial?

Often yes, on separate days or weeks apart as the doctor plans. Having a peel and the laser on the same day is not usually advised.

How do I know if a dark mark is safe to treat?

The doctor examines it first. A mole or mark that is changing, bleeding or looks irregular should be checked and is not lasered until it has been cleared.

Do I need a consultation before a treatment?

Yes. Every treatment starts with a consultation. The doctor examines you and advises a procedure only if it suits you; many can be done the same day.
