- What is it?
- A scalp examination to find why the scalp flakes or itches, an in-clinic scalp peel or treatment, and a medicated shampoo routine for home.
- How many sessions?
- Usually 2 to 4 in-clinic sessions, about two weeks apart, alongside the home routine.
- How long does it last?
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis and psoriasis are long-term conditions that can return, so the home routine matters as much as the clinic sessions.
- Is it safe?
- Yes, when the doctor first confirms the cause and chooses a peel and shampoo suited to your scalp. Mild stinging or redness is common.
What is Dandruff Treatment?
Dandruff is flaking of the scalp skin. When it is stubborn, itchy or red, it is often seborrhoeic dermatitis, scalp psoriasis or a fungal problem rather than simple dryness. These need different treatment, so the first step is to find out which one it is.
Seborrhoeic dermatitis is an inflammation linked to the yeast that normally lives on the scalp. Scalp psoriasis causes thicker, silvery, well-defined patches. A fungal infection of the scalp (tinea) can cause scaling and patchy hair loss, and needs antifungal medicine.
At the clinic the doctor examines the scalp, with a dermoscope if needed, and treats it with an in-clinic scalp peel or cleansing treatment and a medicated shampoo and lotion routine for home. An inflamed scalp can add to hair fall, so the doctor also looks for other causes of hair fall, including blood tests for iron and ferritin, thyroid and vitamin D, and treatment for dandruff works alongside hair treatment, not instead of it.
Used for
What it can help with
- Cause confirmed
The doctor finds what is behind the flaking.
- Less itching
Often settles within a few weeks.
- Clear routine
A home plan for shampoos, lotions and oiling.
- Short sessions
About 30 minutes, with no time off.
- Supports hair care
A settled scalp helps any hair treatment you are having.
How does it work?
- Diagnosis
The doctor looks at the scalp, with a dermoscope if needed, and finds the type of flaking.
- Cleansing
A scalp peel or cleansing treatment loosens flakes and excess oil from the surface.
- Medication
A medicated shampoo or lotion reduces the yeast, inflammation or scaling, depending on the cause.
- Maintenance
A home routine keeps the scalp settled, because these conditions tend to return.
What happens during a session?
- Examination
The doctor looks at the scalp, with a dermoscope if needed, and asks about oiling, shampoos and hair fall.
- Cleansing
The scalp is gently cleansed and brushed to loosen flakes.
- Peel or treatment
A mild scalp peel or medicated treatment is applied for a short time and then rinsed off.
- Home routine
The doctor writes out the shampoo, lotion and oiling routine for you and fixes your follow-up.
Who is a good candidate?
- Persistent dandruff that over-the-counter shampoos have not settled
- An itchy, flaky or red scalp
- Greasy scales or yellowish crusts on the scalp or behind the ears
- Thick, silvery patches that may be scalp psoriasis
- Scalp acne or oily scalp with hair fall
Is dandruff and scalp treatment safe for Indian skin?
Indian scalps are often oily and a hot, humid climate and frequent oiling add to flaking and itch. Skin colour does not limit scalp treatment, but strong peels can irritate or darken skin if overdone, so the doctor chooses a gentle strength. Hair oiling is adjusted on shampoo days so the medicine can work.
Who should delay or avoid it?
- Open wounds, cuts or raw skin on the scalp
- An active infection, cold sore or open wound on the area
- Allergy to an ingredient in the peel or shampoo
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (the doctor chooses safe options only)
- Recent hair colouring, straightening or chemical treatment (wait a few days)
The doctor checks your medicines and health before any procedure and may advise waiting or a different treatment.

Results: what to expect
Most people notice less itching and flaking over the first two to four weeks. How long the scalp stays settled depends on the cause and on how closely you follow the home routine. Seborrhoeic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis tend to flare again, and the doctor explains how to manage a flare early.
Does it hurt?
The treatment is not painful. A scalp peel can sting or tingle for a few minutes, especially if the scalp is already inflamed, and the doctor rinses it off if it becomes uncomfortable.
Dandruff Treatment cost in Chennai
The cost depends on your skin and your plan. What decides it:
- The number of in-clinic sessions in your plan.
- The type of peel or treatment the doctor chooses.
- The medicated shampoo and lotion at home.
- Tests if a fungal infection or another cause is suspected.

Dandruff Treatment: questions
Is dandruff linked to hair fall?
An inflamed scalp can add to shedding. Treating the dandruff helps, but the doctor also looks for other causes of hair fall, such as iron, thyroid, vitamin D and hormones.
Can dandruff go away completely?
Simple dandruff can settle fully. Seborrhoeic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis are long-term conditions that are controlled, not removed, and may flare again.
Is dandruff caused by a dirty scalp?
No. It is linked to oil, yeast, skin type and inflammation, not to poor hygiene. Over-washing with harsh shampoos can make it worse.
Should I oil my hair?
Heavy oiling can feed the yeast and worsen seborrhoeic dermatitis. The doctor tells you how often, if at all, and adjusts it on shampoo days.
Can a fungal scalp infection look like dandruff?
Yes. Scaling with patches of hair loss can be a fungal infection (tinea capitis), which needs antifungal medicine, and the doctor may take a scraping to confirm.
How often should I use the medicated shampoo?
As the doctor writes it, usually a few times a week at first and then less often. Leave it on the scalp for the full time shown.
Can children have this treatment?
Children are treated with milder options chosen by the doctor, usually shampoos and lotions rather than peels.
Does scalp psoriasis need different treatment?
Yes. It needs medicated lotions and a doctor's plan, and may need other treatment if it is widespread.
When should I see a doctor about dandruff?
If it is red, painful, crusted, spreading beyond the scalp, or if you also notice patchy hair loss or sores.
Do I need a consultation before a treatment?
Yes. Every treatment starts with a consultation. The doctor examines you and advises a procedure only if it suits you; many can be done the same day.
