What is it?
Very fine dissolvable threads (PDO) are placed under the scalp skin of a thinning area to stimulate it. The threads are absorbed by the body over months.
How many sessions?
Often one session for an area, repeated after several months if the doctor advises it.
How long does it last?
The threads dissolve over about 6 months. Any effect on the scalp is gradual, and it does not stop the cause of hair loss.
Is it safe?
Usually, when done in a clean setting by a doctor. Evidence for its effect on hair is limited, so it is offered as an add-on.

What is Hair Thread Treatment?

Hair thread treatment uses very fine, dissolvable threads made of polydioxanone (PDO), the same material used for many years in surgical stitches. The threads are placed just under the scalp skin of a thinning area with a fine needle and are slowly absorbed by the body.

The idea is that the threads stimulate the scalp and encourage the body to repair tissue around the hair roots. Studies are few and small, so the evidence is limited. For this reason it is used as an add-on and not as a stand-alone answer to hair loss.

At Chamak Clinic the cause of hair fall is looked for first, with a scalp examination and blood tests for iron and ferritin, thyroid, vitamin D and hormones where relevant. Threads work alongside prescribed treatment, not instead of it.

Used for

What it can help with

  • Few visits

Often a single session for an area.

  • Dissolves by itself

Nothing is left in the scalp after a few months.

  • Targets one area

Can be placed in the thinning part only.

  • Works with medicines

Added to prescribed treatment, not a replacement for it.

How does it work?

  1. Placement

Fine threads are placed just under the skin of the thinning area with a very thin needle.

  2. Stimulation

The threads act as a mild stimulus, and the body responds by repairing the tissue around them.

  3. Support

That response is thought to improve the blood supply and the environment of the hair roots.

  4. Dissolving

The threads are absorbed over about 6 months, and nothing is left to remove.

What happens during a session?

  1. Assessment

The doctor examines the scalp, reviews your blood tests and medicines, and decides whether threads suit you.

  2. Preparation

The area is cleaned and marked, and local anaesthetic is used to numb it.

  3. Placement

The threads are placed under the scalp skin with a fine needle. This takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

  4. Finishing

A mild dressing may be applied. The doctor explains scalp care and when to wash your hair.

Who is a good candidate?

  • Thinning in one defined area, such as the crown or parting
  • People already on prescribed treatment who want an add-on
  • Early pattern hair loss where roots are still alive
  • Those who prefer a single-visit procedure to a long course

Is hair thread treatment safe for Indian skin?

PDO threads are used on the scalp, with no light or heat, so skin colour does not limit them. The main points are infection, bruising and raised marks in people prone to keloids. The doctor checks these and chooses a clean technique and thread size for your scalp.

Who should delay or avoid it?

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • An active infection, cold sore or open wound on the area
  • A tendency to form keloids or thick scars
  • Blood thinners or a bleeding disorder (tell the doctor)
  • Allergy to any thread material
  • Smooth, shiny bald areas where hair roots have been lost for many years

The doctor checks your medicines and health before any procedure and may advise waiting or a different treatment.

Results: what to expect

Any effect is gradual and is judged over months. Some people notice thicker-looking hair or less shedding in the treated area; others notice little. The threads do not treat the cause of hair loss, so the doctor combines them with prescribed treatment. The doctor reviews the area at each visit.

Does it hurt?

The scalp is numbed before the threads are placed, so most people feel pressure and mild tugging. The area can feel tender or tight for a few days.

Hair Thread Treatment cost in Chennai

The cost depends on your skin and your plan. What decides it:

  • The size of the area and the number of threads.
  • The number of sessions in your plan.
  • Whether threads are combined with PRP, GFC or other treatment.
  • Follow-up visits and repeat sessions later.

Hair Thread Treatment: questions

Do hair threads actually grow hair?

The evidence is limited. Threads stimulate the scalp, but they do not treat the cause of hair loss. They are offered as an add-on, and the doctor tells you honestly what to expect.

Will I still need medicines?

Usually yes. Threads are added to prescribed treatment such as minoxidil or finasteride where the doctor advises them, not used instead of it.

Why are blood tests done first?

Low iron or ferritin, thyroid trouble, low vitamin D and hormone changes can cause hair fall. They need treating first.

Are these the same threads used for face lifting?

The material, PDO, is similar. For hair, very fine threads are placed in the scalp for stimulation, not for lifting.

Can I feel the threads?

Usually not. Occasionally a thread can be felt, and the doctor can deal with it at a follow-up.

Can I have it on a bald patch?

If the scalp is smooth and shiny, the roots are usually lost and threads are unlikely to help.

Can I combine it with PRP or mesotherapy?

Yes, in some plans. The doctor decides the order and the timing so the scalp is not overtreated.

Can women have it?

Yes, once causes such as iron, thyroid, PCOS or a recent delivery are checked. It is avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Do I need a consultation before a treatment?

Yes. Every treatment starts with a consultation. The doctor examines you and advises a procedure only if it suits you; many can be done the same day.
