What is it?
A handpiece with a fine diamond tip or crystals polishes away the top layer of dead skin, with gentle suction.
How many sessions?
Usually 4 to 6, about two weeks apart, then occasional maintenance.
How long does it last?
The smoother look lasts a few weeks. Because skin keeps renewing, repeats are needed to maintain it.
Is it safe for Indian skin?
Yes, at gentle settings. Over-aggressive rubbing can irritate and darken skin, so the doctor sets the pressure and number of passes with care.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation. A handpiece with a fine diamond-tip head, or one that sprays crystals, is passed over the skin in controlled strokes while suction removes the loosened dead cells.

It works only on the outermost layer of skin, so it is a gentle, no-downtime treatment. It is not strong enough for deep scars or strong pigmentation, but it makes skin smoother and helps products and other treatments work better.

Used for

What it can help with

  • Smoother skin

Removes the dull surface layer of dead cells.

  • No downtime

Most people return to normal activity straight away.

  • Gentle

A mild treatment that suits many first-time patients.

  • Better product absorption

Creams and serums reach polished skin more evenly.

  • Good prep

A smooth base before peels or other treatments.

How does it work?

  1. Polishing

The fine tip or crystals rub away the outer layer of dead skin cells.

  2. Suction

A gentle vacuum collects the loosened cells and debris.

  3. Stimulation

The mild friction increases blood flow and nudges the skin to renew itself.

  4. Absorption

Freshly polished skin takes up creams and serums more evenly.

What happens during a session?

  1. Assessment

The doctor checks your skin and chooses the tip or crystals and the pressure.

  2. Cleanse

The skin is cleaned and the eyes are protected.

  3. Polishing

The handpiece is passed over the skin in strokes with light suction, a few passes per area.

  4. Soothing

A calming serum or mask is applied.

  5. Protection

Moisturiser and sunscreen finish the session.

Who is a good candidate?

  • Dull, rough or flaky-looking skin
  • Mild uneven tone and tan
  • Shallow marks after acne
  • Mild blackheads and congested pores
  • A smoother base before a peel or other treatment

Is microdermabrasion safe for Indian skin?

Microdermabrasion has no heat or strong chemicals, but friction can irritate darker skin, and irritation can leave dark marks. The doctor uses light pressure, a limited number of passes and a gap between sessions. The skin is not treated if it is sunburnt, inflamed or actively broken out.

Who should delay or avoid it?

  • An active infection, cold sore or open wound on the area
  • Active or inflamed acne on the area
  • Rosacea or very sensitive skin
  • Eczema or psoriasis flare on the area
  • A fresh tan or sunburn on the area
  • Isotretinoin (acne tablets) in the last six months

The doctor checks your medicines and health before any procedure and may advise waiting or a different treatment.

Results: what to expect

Skin usually feels smoother straight away and looks brighter in tone for some days as the dull layer is gone. Texture and mild marks improve gradually across the course. It is a surface treatment, so it does not change deep scars, strong pigmentation or loose skin. The doctor suggests peels, microneedling or a laser for those.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel a light scratching or a gentle scrub with a slight tugging from the suction. It is not painful. Sensitive areas such as the nose may feel more tender.

Microdermabrasion cost in Chennai

The cost depends on your skin and your plan. What decides it:

  • The area treated: face, or face with neck and chest.
  • The number of sessions in your plan.
  • Any serum or mask added to the session.

Microdermabrasion: questions

Is microdermabrasion enough for acne scars?

Not for most. It helps very shallow marks and texture. Pitted or rolling scars need microneedling, subcision or a laser.

Does it remove tan?

It removes tan that sits in the top layer of skin, so it can help mild tan over a few sessions. Deeper pigment needs peels or a laser.

Is it the same as a scrub?

It is a controlled, doctor-supervised version. Unlike a home scrub, the pressure, number of passes and suction are set for your skin.

Can I have it with pimples?

Not on inflamed pimples; friction can spread bacteria and worsen breakouts. The doctor treats the acne first.

How often can I have it?

Usually every two weeks during a course, then every 4 to 6 weeks for maintenance. More often can irritate the skin.

Is it different from a hydra facial?

Yes. Microdermabrasion polishes mechanically with suction. A hydra facial exfoliates with fluid and infuses serums. See the comparison above.

Can men have it?

Yes. It helps with rough skin and ingrown hairs, with care on the beard area.

Is it safe in pregnancy?

It has no chemicals, so it is usually acceptable, but the doctor checks the skin first. Tell us if you are pregnant.

Can I have it before an event?

Yes. Book it a few days before so any pinkness settles, and avoid trying anything new on the day.

Do I need a consultation before a treatment?

Yes. Every treatment starts with a consultation. The doctor examines you and advises a procedure only if it suits you; many can be done the same day.
