Hair loss in women

Hair fall treatment for women at Chamak Clinic, Chennai

Finding the cause first, then treating the thinning itself.

In women, hair fall often has a cause that can be found: low iron or vitamin D, thyroid trouble, PCOS, a recent delivery, crash dieting or illness.

What causes hair loss in women?

  • Low iron (ferritin), vitamin D or B12
  • Thyroid trouble
  • PCOS and other hormonal changes
  • Pregnancy and delivery
  • Crash diets, illness, fever or surgery
  • Female pattern hair loss (genes and hormones)

Signs to look for

  • A widening parting
  • Thinner ponytail
  • Heavy shedding after delivery, illness or stress
  • Thinning with irregular periods or acne

The doctor looks for it first, with blood tests where needed, then treats the thinning itself with prescription care and, for some, procedures such as PRP or GFC.

Types of hair loss in women

  • Shedding (telogen effluvium)Sudden heavy hair fall, two to three months after a trigger.
  • Female pattern thinningA widening parting and thinner hair at the top.
  • Hormonal hair lossThinning with irregular periods, acne or facial hair.
  • Patchy lossRound, smooth bald patches.

How the doctor treats it

  • Blood tests for iron, thyroid, vitamin D and hormones where needed.
  • Correcting the cause.
  • Prescription treatment for thinning.
  • PRP, GFC, mesotherapy or peptide therapy as add-ons.

The doctor decides what is right for you after examining you. A prescription is written only when one is appropriate.

Your treatment journey

  1. Consultation

The doctor examines your skin or scalp, asks about your history and medicines, and orders tests only if they are needed.

  2. Preparation

Prescribed creams, sun care or a test spot first, so the skin is ready and the risk of irritation stays low.

  3. Treatment

In-clinic sessions, spaced over weeks, alongside a home routine that does most of the daily work.

  4. Aftercare

Review visits, home care and a maintenance plan, so the improvement lasts.

Home care that helps

  • Regular meals with enough protein and iron; no crash diets.
  • Supplements only as the doctor advises after tests.
  • Loose hairstyles; avoid tight buns and frequent heat styling.
  • A gentle shampoo; oiling is fine but does not stop hair fall on its own.

When to see a doctor

  • Hair fall for more than three months
  • A widening parting
  • Hair fall with irregular periods, acne or facial hair
  • Sudden patches of hair loss

Hair Fall Treatment for Women: questions

Is hair fall after delivery permanent?

Usually not. It peaks around three to four months after delivery and settles within a year. If it does not, or the parting widens, see the doctor.

Which blood tests are needed?

Commonly ferritin, haemoglobin, thyroid, vitamin D and B12, and hormone tests if PCOS is suspected. The doctor chooses based on your history.

Can PCOS cause hair loss?

Yes. PCOS can thin the hair on the scalp. Treating the hormones helps, alongside treatment for the hair.

Is PRP safe while breastfeeding?

PRP uses your own blood, but the doctor usually waits and focuses on the cause and safe home care while you are breastfeeding.

Do hair oils stop hair fall?

Oiling keeps hair soft but does not treat the cause of hair fall.

Do I need a consultation before a treatment?

Yes. Every treatment starts with a consultation. The doctor examines you and advises a procedure only if it suits you; many can be done the same day.

How much does a treatment cost?

The consultation is ₹500. Treatment prices depend on the area, what is used and the number of sessions, so the doctor gives you the exact price after examining your skin — before anything is done.

Not sure where to start with hair loss in women?

A consultation comes first: Dr Rohini K examines you, explains the options that suit you, and tells you the plan and the price before anything is done.
