Bald patches (alopecia areata)
Online skin doctor for bald patches and alopecia areata
A round, smooth bald patch on the scalp or beard that appeared within weeks, sometimes more than one. Send photos and the skin doctor tells you what it is and how it is usually treated.
₹299 for a chat consult.
- Dr. Rohini K replies within 30 minutes, day or night.
- Prescription in the chat and on WhatsApp, when one is right
- 48 hours of follow-up questions included
What to send the doctor
- Close photos of each patch, and photos of the whole head from the top and the back.
- When you noticed it, and whether it is growing or new patches have appeared.
- Any scaling, itching, pus or pain on the scalp, and patches on the eyebrows, eyelashes or beard.
- Thyroid or other long-term conditions, recent illness or stress, and pets at home for a child.
What the doctor looks for
- Alopecia areata, or a scalp fungal infection, which is common in children and needs tablets.
- Hair pulling, tight hairstyles, or hair loss that leaves scars.
- Whether the patch is still spreading or has started to regrow.
- Small dents in the nails, which often go with alopecia areata.
What the plan usually covers
- Prescription treatment for the patches, usually a lotion or cream, with how long to use it.
- Whether injections into the patch, given in person, would help larger patches.
- Blood tests for thyroid, vitamin D and iron when the history points to them.
- What regrowth looks like (fine, pale hairs come first) and when to check back.
The doctor decides what is right for you. A prescription is written only when one is appropriate.
When a chat is not enough
- A swollen, painful patch with pus or crusts, often in a child. See a doctor in person soon.
- Losing most of the scalp hair within weeks, or bald patches that leave shiny, scarred skin.
Questions
- Will the hair grow back?
- Often, yes. Many small patches regrow within a year, and treatment can speed it up. New patches can still appear later.
- Is alopecia areata caused by stress?
- It is an immune condition, in which the body's defences attack the hair roots. Stress may trigger a patch, but it is not the only cause, and it is not contagious.
- Could a bald patch be ringworm?
- In children especially, a scalp fungal infection can look similar, with scale or broken hairs. It needs antifungal tablets, so photos and a doctor's look matter.
- Who will I be speaking to?
- Dr. Rohini K (MBBS, IFAAM (Aesthetic Medicine), Fellowship in Cosmetic Dermatology), the skin and hair doctor on PingMeDoc™'s teleconsultation panel. Every skin and hair consult booked through Chamak goes to the skin doctor, day or night, with a reply usually within 30 minutes.
- What does it cost?
- ₹299 for a chat consult. Audio or video from ₹499. The price is shown before you pay and covers the written plan and 48 hours of follow-up questions in the same chat.
- Will I get a prescription?
- Only if the doctor finds one appropriate. When issued, it is a digital prescription sent in the chat and on WhatsApp, valid at any pharmacy.
- Where does the consult happen?
- Booking, payment and the chat run on www.pingmedoc.com, our teleconsultation site. You are asked for a phone number and a one-time code at payment, and nothing before that. Chamak and PingMeDoc are the same company.
