What to send the doctor

  1. Daylight photos of each patch, close and from further away, and one under the phone torch if you can.
  2. When it started, and whether patches have spread or new ones have appeared in the last six months.
  3. Whether the patches itch, scale, or feel less when touched.
  4. Family history of vitiligo or thyroid problems, and every treatment you have tried.

What the doctor looks for

  • Vitiligo or a look-alike: a fungal infection with fine scale, pale patches on children's cheeks, or marks left after a rash.
  • Whether vitiligo is spreading (active) or has stayed the same (stable), which decides the treatment.
  • Where the patches are, because the face responds best and the hands, feet and lips most slowly.
  • Pale patches that have lost feeling, which need an in-person examination.

What the plan usually covers

  • Prescription creams for small or new patches, with how long to use them and what to watch for.
  • Whether light treatment, which is given in person, would help wider patches.
  • Sun protection for the patches, and cover-up make-up options if you want them.
  • A thyroid test, because thyroid problems are more common with vitiligo.

Questions

Is vitiligo contagious?
No. Vitiligo does not spread from person to person by touch, food or sharing things.
Is every white patch vitiligo?
No. A fungal infection, pale patches on children's cheeks and marks after a rash are more common, and each is treated differently. Clear photos are usually enough to tell them apart.
Can vitiligo be treated?
Yes. Treatment can bring colour back, best on the face and on new patches. The hands, feet and lips respond more slowly, and patches can return, so treatment is usually long.
Does drinking milk after eating fish cause white patches?
No. There is no evidence that any food combination causes vitiligo. You do not need to give up any food.
